This sailor dress is complete with a flap collar and militaresque stripes and embroidery. It has details such as the single stripe on the sleeve, shaped yoke, double stripes on the blue sleeve cuff, triple stripes on the flap collar, the right sleeve has a arm patch with embroidered stars and eagle, as well as chevron stripes, and red lined shirt pocket with embroidery reinforcing the corners - all characteristic of a Peter Thomson dress from the early twentieth century. Even Peter Thomson outfits for boys included these details, so this is most likely one of Thomson’s dresses. Mother of pearl buttons are used to close the front and the cuffs. The collar and the false belt are secured with metal snaps. Decorative ties are located on the center-back below the waist. Examples of similar pieces can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (example 1, example 2) and Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collections (example 3).
