Description
Faced with the grim prospect of attending military school at the height of the Russo-Japanese War, Yasuo Kuniyoshi persuaded his parents to allow him to instead pursue a career as an artist in the United States. After three years at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design, Kuniyoshi headed east, to New York, where he enrolled at the Art Students League. Primarily interested in painting, he studied for several years with Kenneth Hayes Miller, who also introduced him to intaglio printmaking. His interests turned to lithography after attending a demonstration held by George Miller at the Whitney Studio Club; however, his efforts on stone blossomed only after working with the master lithographer Edmond Desjobert during a visit to Paris in 1928. During his eight-month stay, Kuniyoshi produced a remarkable twenty-four lithographs. Interior with Dress Form, which depicts a view from the artist’s Parisian apartment into a room in the next building, belongs to this group of prints.
