Description
Robert Rohm, a sculptor of international renown, was not a prolific printmaker. Indeed, the untitled drypoint on view here may represent the full extent of his efforts in any print medium. It resides at Penn State because Rohm’s work was included in a show, titled Six Sculptors, organized on campus at the HUB Gallery in the early fall of 1967 by Richard Fraenkel, then a professor of art at the University and the gallery’s director of exhibitions. The following spring, Fraenkel encountered the print at the home of a former colleague and mutual friend, and arranged to acquire an example for the University’s collection.
At the time of Rohm’s participation in the Penn State exhibition, his minimalist-inspired sculpture often featured large, wall-mounted grids constructed in rope, which were sliced in certain areas to allow segments to fall in a seemingly aleatoric manner. His contemporaneous print, bearing two distinct breaks in its graph-like pattern, suggests a similar aesthetic.
