Description
Italian native Gerardo Belfiore immigrated at the age of 16 to the United States, where he settled in Philadelphia. Although largely self-taught, he had become competent enough as an artist by 1937 to be hired by the WPA/FAP’s Fine Print Workshop, where he explored the full range of print mediums, including, under the guidance of Dox Thrash, the newly invented Carborundum mezzotint.
Mid-City depicts a group of people passing through the west portal of Philadelphia City Hall. The view to the west behind them features the pedestrian bridge that extended over Market Street between the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Broad Street Station and the Arcade Building (demolished in 1953 and 1969, respectively).
