Description
Poor executed several larger-than-life sized studies for the figure of Abraham Lincoln, for reasons that exceeded the president’s physical prominence in the fresco. In the statement that accompanied his presentation to the Board of Trustees, the artist wrote:
I want Lincoln to be a symbol of hope and faith and more than just a part of the design because of his historic signing of the Morrill Act. I want his face and figure to express also doubts and tragedy, and the full fruit of what he hoped, to be expressed in the figure of the young student holding the tree to be planted.
