Description
Poor dedicated nearly eight months to preparatory work, between September 1939 and April 1940, before beginning the actual painting of the north wall in Old Main. Much of that time was spent traveling throughout Pennsylvania, making numerous sketches of the agricultural and industrial wealth he observed. This painting, developed from a farm scene he encountered southeast of Harrisburg, is a study for the far left portion of the mural. About it he said:
At the extreme left, there is a Pennsylvania barnyard with a family gathered to say goodbye to the son starting off to school. The landscape background here is the rolling tree-crested hills of Pennsylvania with many rich farms.
