Description

The contract engaging Henry Varnum Poor to paint the east and west walls of the mezzanine floor in Old Main’s lobby was drawn up in May 1947. As with the north wall, a significant amount of time was necessary for preparatory work—in this instance, about ten months—before Poor was ready to begin the actual painting. This sheet represents one of the artist’s first realizations of the overall plan, and contains most of the themes, albeit in notation rather than in actual imagery, that found their way into the final version.
