Description

In this study for the left segment of the west wall, probably one of the very last before the painting began, Poor worked out the many of the details for the final composition. He was particularly interested in getting the horses right. "Before people entirely forget what draft horses look like," he wrote in a commentary on the frescoes, "I wanted to plant two here as a reminder of what noble animals they were."

This section would eventually hold one of the numerous portraits of persons who helped to bring the frescoes to fruition. Stuart Frost, who assisted in the plastering during the last two sessions, and who also was asked by Poor to paint a small section of the frescoes, provided the likeness for the individual holding the lead bull to the left of the horses.
