Description

Invited to participate in the 1948 exhibition at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, titled Painting in the United States, Poor submitted this oil study for the large section on the east wall representing mining and metallurgy. The tilted cross of beams looming behind the ascending miners clearly relates to their hazardous occupation. "In the cage of miners," Poor wrote in one of his proposals for this series, "without indulging in drama, I want to suggest the sort of crucifixion which all mining work is, regardless of modern aids and safety devices."
