In the fall of 1929, after nearly a decade of success as a ceramist, Poor traveled to France to rededicate himself to painting. He and his family first settled for about six months in the Mediterranean coastal town of La Ciotat, and then spent the summer of 1930 in Paris. This self-portrait shows the artist in his Parisian studio in the Avenue de la Grand-Chaumière.
