Description
When the United States entered World War I, Henry Varnum Poor was drafted and sent to France in August 1918. Although offered an officer’s commission, he elected to serve as a private, figuring it would give him more time to draw. This watercolor, a fall scene featuring an unknown village in France, was likely painted in the weeks surrounding the armistice that brought the war to the end.
