Description
In 1920, Poor purchased a parcel of land on South Mountain Road in Rockland County, just north of New York City. He built a home on the property—Crow House, it was called—and the artist and his family became among the first to join a quietly growing artistic community that eventually included the playwright Maxwell Anderson, the actors Burgess Meredith and John Houseman, and the lyricist Alan Jay Lerner.
Naturally the surrounding landscape became a prime target for Poor’s brush. This painting features High Tor, the highest point on South Mountain and the dominant geological structure in the area. In the foreground lies Brook House, named after the trout stream that runs near the structure, which in 1941 became home to composer Kurt Weill and his actress wife, Lotte Lenya.
