Description

Edwin Whitefield was a largely self-taught artist who worked first in his native England and then in Canada for at least a decade before immigrating to the United States around 1837. He settled in the New York City area, sketching along the Hudson River and providing illustrations for numerous publications. In the mid-1840s he traveled the Northeast, making picturesque drawings of towns and natural vistas for a book, titled 'North American Scenery', which he published in 1846. Although this charming view of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, originated from a sketchbook created around the time Whitefield was working on 'North American Scenery', it was not one of the twenty-eight drawings he selected to be lithographed for the project.
