Description
This charming view of Lancaster was drawn on stone by James Benade, about whom we know relatively little not because he lacked talent, but because he died so young, at the age of 30. The son of a bishop of the Moravian Church in Bethlehem, Benade studied in Philadelphia with the painter Gustavus Grunewald, and it was likely through Grunewald’s influence that he showed two landscapes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1848. Between c. 1842 and 1850, he is known to have produced a number of lithographs for several Philadelphia publishing firms; however, to date only a handful have been identified.
