Description

Landscape painter Charles Louis Fussell was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. Just before the start of the Civil War, and for several years after, he trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. From the late 1860s until his death in 1909, he travelled widely in search of motifs for his work, from Colorado to Long Island, returning to Philadelphia only for about a three-year period between 1878 and 1882. It was likely then that C. J. Corbin, who after closing his own lithography business in 1879 became the manager of the Philadelphia Publishing House, engaged Fussell to provide drawings for his firm’s lithographs.

This view of Lock Haven is atypical of Fussell’s work—he preferred a far more rustic subject matter. Since we know he drew at least one landscape for Corbin after a photograph (a view of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, in 1882), it’s fair to wonder whether a similar source was utilized here.
