Description
J. Thomas Williams was a photographer in York during the 1850s who, like most photographers of his day, employed the daguerreotype process, and not only to make portraits. Evidently in an attempt to break into the view making business, he brought photos he had taken of the city of York to Edward Sachse (1804–1873), a recent immigrant from Germany who operated a lithography company in Baltimore, to have them copied onto stone and printed. Since we known of only one other view published by Williams, of Harrisburg in 1855, we can surmise that his effort in this direction were short lived.
The view here, surrounded by vignettes that single out the city’s more prominent buildings, is from what is now Prospect Hill Cemetery looking south, down the Harrisburg Road (today North George Street) and across Codorus Creek. The large steeple just to the right of center belongs to the Christ Lutheran Church, and just to the left of the church stands the York County Court House.
