Description
Naoko Matsubara, the daughter of a Shinto priest, followed an international career path. Having studied at the Kyoto Academy of Fine Arts, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Royal College of Art in London, she traveled Europe and Asia for two years. After returning to Japan briefly she settled in North America, and now lives in Canada. Among other projects, she illustrated a German translation of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, or Princess Kaguya, for which her sister, Hisako, provided translation and commentary.
In this sheet, Autumn Finale, the blowing wind is signaled by bent branches and leaves flying overhead. Most of Matsubara’s prints are multicolored; this unusual image signals the end of autumn and the start of winter, the time when nature seems to become more monochromatic.
