Description
This plate was decorated using a technique called kasuri-mon, in which, after the clay begins to harden, the potter uses a sharp, curved tool called a kanna to carve away sections of the piece while it spins slowly on a throwing wheel. One of the most appreciated aspects of Onda ware is the fact that no two are the same. This example features a very noticeable area of greenish-blue discoloration that may or may not have been intentional, but was valued when the piece was completed. The discoloration makes clear that the plate was handmade and is entirely one of a kind, while still adhering to the specifications of Onda custom.
