Description
Maruta studied with Shōji Hamada, who singled him out as "an artist to represent [Japanese] folk art to the West." This vase was thrown on a potter’s wheel, fired at a high temperature, topped with a salt glaze and then fired again. The broad brushstrokes visible on the vase were created using the hakeme technique, in which a thick coat of slip is applied using a stiff brush made of straw (it resembles a small broom). Unlike Maruta’s vessels for sumi ink painting or the tea ceremony displayed in the exhibition, this spherical vase is simply decorative.
