Description

This vase in the form of a sumi ink dropper originates from Karatsu, which is known for its simple, sturdy style of pottery. Karatsu pottery is made from a clay high in iron and can be undecorated or decorated with an iron-based underglaze, giving an earthy, simple, and natural feeling to the pieces. Karatsu ware is fired in climbing kilns, which have multiple chambers on different levels. This maximizes the total kiln capacity and, because heat rises through the chambers, variety of pottery and glazes that can be fired at once. This vase was applied with a simple rice ash glaze, which acts as a sealant.
