Description

Influenced by his mentor, Shoji Hamada, whose work is displayed to the right, Shimaoka developed a unique style of pottery called jomon zogan, fusing two traditional styles of decoration: the jomon rope technique and a Korean Yi Dynasty process of adding white slip to decorative indentations. Jomon zogan uses lengths of silk rope, often handmade by Shimaoka’s father, which are impressed into soft clay, resulting in the variegated pattern visible here and on his adjacent rounded vase. The color of the decoration is obtained by coating the clay with a white slip, and then scraping patterns into the surface once the slip sets.
