Description

In 1820, George Harvey arrived in the United States, where he excelled at rendering the effects of weather in a precise watercolor style that made novel use of stippling, a demanding technique of close-set dots. This late work is reminiscent of his so-called Atmospheric Landscapes (c. 1836–40), an ambitious series of forty watercolors devoted to specific regions of North America at different times of day and under varying meteorological conditions. His reputation today rests almost entirely on that project, and few examples by the artist exist after 1840, making the rare watercolor on view here especially intriguing.
