Description

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, no American artist, except perhaps his younger brother James MacDougal Hart, pictured bovine subjects as often as William Hart. As a landscape painter, he became distinguished for depicting pastures where cows graze or drink. Hart remarked on this abiding interest in 1887, “I love my cattle, but they bow my spirit low. How is it possible to do them justice!”
