Description

Seymour Joseph Guy painted numerous sentimental scenes of domestic life, typically incorporating young people. In some respects, his paintings celebrated childhood innocence as a redemptive force in the aftermath of the bloody American Civil War (1861–65). The barefoot boy in this drawing emerges from energetic lines of cross hatching, as Guy suggests an inquisitive personality through an impressive visual economy. Drawings by Guy are exceedingly rare.
