Description

William Henry Bartlett is best known for the travel books containing engravings of his topographical and architectural sketches. A prolific draftsman and perpetual explorer, he traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East and visited the United States four times between 1836 and 1852. This watercolor of the Elymian temple at Segesta, from the fifth century BCE, anticipates his book Pictures from Sicily (1853), whose title page features an illustration of the monument.
