Description
Réthi is one of the few artists in the Steidle Collection who did not live and work in Pennsylvania. She was born in Vienna, Austria and worked as an artist and illustrator in Germany until the late 1930s. In Europe, particularly in Germany and Belgium, she was known for her illustrations of building projects and industries. Upon moving to New York City in 1939, Réthi applied for citizenship and continued creating industrial and construction themed lithographic illustrations.
Réthi’s illustrations have appeared in numerous volumes, including Builders for the Battle: How the Pacific Naval Airbases Were Constructed (1946), Franklin D. Roosevelt's Hyde Park (1947), The Bridge: Views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (1964), and The Kennebec River (1967).
