Description
Since 1859, the advent of the petroleum industry in northwest Pennsylvania, technology used to extract oil from underground fields or pools has become more efficient. By the 20th century, multiple pump jacks drawing oil from small wells could be linked together and efficiently operated by a central power station. Oil extracted from small wells accumulated in holding tanks next to the jacks before being collected and transported to refineries.
