Description
Sample Run Mine Number One opened in 1905. Mine Number Two opened in 1936. These were captive mines producing coal only for use in the steam locomotives of their parent company, the New York Central Railroad. In 1926, an explosion in Mine Number One took the lives of 44 mine workers. Both mines were closed by 1955 and the tracks removed.
Pattison was a prize-winning artist who lived and worked in Indiana, Pennsylvania. She was the founder and first president of the Indiana Art Association where the Carrie Pattison Award was established to honor her work with the Association. She was also a member of the Allied Artists of Johnstown and of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.
