Description
A resident of Latrobe, Westmoreland County, Himler commuted the forty miles to Pittsburgh to study art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. After graduating in 1928, she continued her education at University of Pittsburgh and Columbia University in New York City before returning to Latrobe as an art educator. In 1934, Himler was awarded the alumnae prize from the University of Pittsburgh School of Design for the best painting by a woman artist.
As a high school art teacher, Himler co-founded the Greater Latrobe Area High School Art Appreciation Club. Each year she worked with the senior class to purchase a work of art to add to the club’s collection. The collection, maintained by the GLSD Art Conservation Trust, is now known as the Greater Latrobe School District Special Art Collection. The collection continues to grow and is on display in the corridors of the Greater Latrobe Senior High School.
