Like many of the artists represented in the Steidle Collection, McGary was a well-known Pittsburgh artist who was regularly invited to exhibit in the prestigious Carnegie Institute annual summer art exhibition. McGary was also a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the oldest, continuously-exhibiting, visual arts organization in the United States.
