Description

Using an electric arc to weld together metal pieces was developed in the 1880s and continues to be used for a variety of welding methods today. Personal Protective Equipment developed to be worn by welders include heavy leather gloves, long-sleeved jackets, insulated boots, and helmets with dark UV-filtering face plates that prevent burns and injuries such as “arc eye” or welder's flash (inflammation of the cornea caused by UV radiation from the arc during welding).

Olive Nuhfer, a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, was a prolific and well-known painter, sculptor, costume designer, and arts educator. Nuhfer earned BFA from University of Oklahoma before engaging in graduate studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology.
